| Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (casually known as the Mormon Church), twelve apostles are called by God to help the First Presidency lead the Church and be special witnesses of Jesus Christ to the world. Boyd K. Packer (Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles) Boyd Kenneth Packer was born on September 10, 1924 in Brigham City, Utah. He was the tenth of eleven children born to Ira and Emma Packer and was the first of their children to be born in a hospital. Oaks was born in Provo, Utah on August 12, 1932. His father died of tuberculosis when he was only eight years old. Just three years after his father’s death Elder Oaks began working to help his mother. His first job was to sweep at a radio repair shop. He was the only boy with three sisters. In 1948 he was called to serve a mission to England. He was a counselor in the mission presidency and served honorably. He returned in 1950 and met Barbara Bowen at a dance held at the University of Utah. They dated for eleven months. (Read more). Joseph Bitner Wirthlin was born on June 11, 1917 in Salt Lake City, Utah. As a youth he enjoyed singing and athletics and was the quarterback on his high school football team and the halfback at the University of Utah. He was called on a mission to Germany and Switzerland. Richard Gordon Scott was sustained to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) on October 1, 1988 and was ordained on October 6, 1988, filling the vacancy left after the death of Elder Marion G. Romney. Elder Scott was born on November 7, 1928 to Kenneth Leroy and Mary Whittle Scott (Read more). Robert Dean Hales was sustained to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 2, 1994 and ordained an apostle on April 7, 1994. He grew up in a small branch (small congregation in the Mormon Church) that often met in a hotel room or the Eyring home. Both of his parents were highly educated. Uchtdorf was born in Czechoslovakia on November 6, 1940 in the middle of the horror of World War II. While Elder Uchtdorf was very young his father was taken and forced to join the German army.
