The Book of Mormon was written for us and for our day. It is the message of a fallen people whose pride proved to be its destruction. The Lord has warned us to beware of pride lest we be as the Nephites of old. Pride is often misunderstood. The central feature of pride is enmity toward God and our fellowmen. This enmity is a competition of our will versus God’s will. The scriptures contain many examples of those beset with pride. The proud love “the praise of men more than the praise of God.” Pride is as common among those on the “bottom” looking up as those on the “top” looking down. Pride is the universal sin, the great vice. Pride is the great stumbling block to Zion. The antidote for pride is humility, meekness, and submissiveness. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles)SummaryIn Mormon belief, the Lord’s tender mercies are the very personal and individualized blessings, strength, protection, assurances, guidance, loving-kindnesses, consolation, support, and spiritual gifts which we receive from the Lord Jesus Christ. One of the ways whereby the Savior comes to each of us is through His abundant and tender mercies. Mormonism teaches that through faithfulness, obedience, and humility we invite tender mercies into our lives, and it is often the Lord’s timing that enables us to recognize and treasure these important blessings. By loving one another and choosing God, we become God’s chosen and invite His tender mercies into our lives.
